Chaos and Addiction
Chaos. It follows addicts as a result of their choices and actions. The active addict can create hurricanes of dysfunction that devistate their jobs, family and health. I've noticed how chaos can also follow the addict into a treatment center. The dysregulation of emotion and acting out can send shock waves through any system, even in recovery. Being a counselor often on the recieving end of instability, I anticipate and sometimes even expect this. Various forms of acting out or out right rebelion can disrupt treatment. However, I have not yet found the hopeless case. I've certainly had my buttons pushed but I remember that the source of the conflict is the addiction and the pain, not the struggling human I have the priviledge of working with. I have arrived at a place where as a treatment provider I try to meet people where they are at and understand that working through chaos is part of the process. Bring the dysfunction, bring the fears, bring the struggle to a place where it is welcomed. If you find that you have reached the point where you are ready to fight the irratic and unstable, then take a step, make a call, reach out, there are people who will accept you and your problems just as they are.
